It’s finally here!! Interactive advertising on Xbox Live using Kinect!

Control the ad with gestures or voice command. Advertisers get real-time feedback from consumers via the console. Can’t wait to see this roll out, this will open up a whole new avenue for creative advertising.

  8. Who needs Microsoft surface when you’ve got this?

Ubi Interactive, have created a novel way to turn any surface into an interactive touchscreen. Ubi’s hardware is the same cutting edge motion and depth sensor camera from the Microsoft Kinect.

When the camera is aimed at a computer display, the Ubi software turns a user’s movements into gesture commands, allowing you to do away with your mouse for good. The device can also be paired with a projector in order to turn a wall or table into an interactive display.

Check out a demo video from one user below:

“When a popular fashion brand moves into an iconic location in the world’s most famous square, it calls for something epic. Something shocking. Something disruptive. Something that the hundreds of thousands of people who pass through Times Square every day can’t miss.

To avoid being just another fashion billboard, we created a revolutionary digital billboard that features models interacting with Times Square’s ever-present crowd. Using innovative computer vision technology, the models snap pictures of people on the street, then pick them up, kiss them, put them in their bags, and more. The interactions change constantly, just like Forever 21’s inventory and brand promise.”

The billboard relies on technology that’s usually used in government or security surveillance, and the digital agency, Space150, had to consult surveillance experts to pull it off. Above the 61-ft.-high space, a high-definition Prosilica camera captures the crowd. But then, software picks apart the individuals in the crowd, and selects some for a digital composite built in real time, which is then used in the interactions with the virtual model on screen.

The software even picks up the yellow of the Forever 21 bag, so that anyone holding one is more likely to get noticed by the model. (If someone actually goes into the store, there are a now heat sensors that detect their bags, and cause a bunch of flash bulbs surrounding the threshold to go off, simulating dozens of paparazzi.)

”If you see the way the computer works, it’s like Predator or something,” says Billy Jurewicz, founder and CEO of Space150. “Each person has a halo with data.” Adds Jurewicz, “The board now is like the iPod 1.0. We’re going to be updating this more and more.” Future versions, with better cameras, might include the model holding a magnifying glass to the crowd, or picking someone up and holding them up to the face of the billboard, so the entire crowd can get a closer look. “People just love to see themselves.” And the billboard is a huge mirror in Times Square, one of the most famous places in the world.

Microsoft Kinect outdoor piece for NRMA went up overnight in Martin Place - very cool. Lean left or right to spin the car, interact using hand gestures.
NRMA also did an interactive bus shelter ad that I played with at Wynyard a few months ago for the same campaign - ‘like’ the NRMA page and you could choose different kinds of music from your iPhone to play out of the bus stop in-built speakers!
The whole campaign revolves around ‘discovering which parts of your car your insurance may not automatically cover’ leading to NRMA’s promise - ‘we automatically insure the extras others don’t.’ Great to see more and more brands getting out there and using new technologies. Nice job Whybin\TBWA\Tequila!

  11. Probably the most flat, boring and uninspiring video and voiceover, but a very cool demonstration of a new technology called Touché - which is Touch Interaction on Humans, Screens, Liquids, and Everyday Objects. Touché proposes a novel Swept Frequency Capacitive Sensing technique that can not only detect a touch event, but also recognize complex configurations of the human hands and body.

Not sure how this will go in the future, but an interesting piece of technology nonetheless. Really like the idea of the mobile gestures.

Also… who eats cereal with water?! Really?

Big ups to Dylan for sharing.

  12. Microsoft Surface Table Fun!

A few weeks back I went to another fantastic Youngbloods event - this time hosted by Iain and Stephan at Amnesia Razorfish, educating us on the digital consumer. I was absolutely on the edge of my seat the whole time - soaking it all up. Was a great night. Still got some interesting notes to come, but in the meantime, here are a few videos of us having a play with the Windows surface table - VERY cool! Enjoy!
